Close up of a woman with facial pain.A blow to the face can result in serious oral and maxillofacial trauma that requires immediate treatment. At Oral Solutions NW, we specialize in several surgical procedures designed to repair damage caused by dental trauma. In some cases, our treatments can make the difference between saving and losing a tooth. If you have recently experienced dental trauma, oral surgery may be the best way to restore the function and aesthetics of your smile.

Facial Trauma

At Oral Solutions NW we understand the profound impact of facial trauma and its potential consequences. Whether resulting from accidents, sports injuries, or other unfortunate incidents, facial trauma can cause significant damage to the delicate structures of the face. Our experienced team is dedicated to providing comprehensive care for facial trauma patients, utilizing advanced techniques and state-of-the-art technology to restore both function and aesthetics.

As a board-certified oral surgeon, Dr. Crowley is highly-skilled, well-trained, and extremely qualified to treat and manage facial trauma. We work with local hospitals to deliver emergency coverage for facial injuries and trauma, the most common of which include the following conditions:
•  Intraoral lacerations
•  Facial lacerations
•  Avulsed or knocked out teeth
•  Broken facial bones (socket of the eye, nose, or cheek)
•  Fractured jaws

Most Common Types of Dental Injuries

You may experience dental trauma due to a sports accident, fall, car accident, or violence. Dental trauma often involves the anterior (front) teeth but can occur in any area of the mouth. The most common types of dental injuries include:
•  Chipped Tooth
•  Cracked or Fractured Tooth
•  Knocked-Out Tooth (avulsion)
•  Broken or Damaged Jaw
•  Soft Tissue Lacerations
•  Damage to Other Maxillofacial Structures

Do You Need Emergency Treatment?

As with any injury, you should consult with a medical professional immediately following your dental trauma to find out if you need emergency treatment. Severe pain is a pretty strong indicator that you need to schedule an immediate appointment. Dr. Jeffrey Crowley will only be able to determine if you need emergency surgery in person.

During your emergency appointment, we will perform a thorough examination of your injury to conclude if surgery is necessary. This may include x-rays of the affected area to gather a more comprehensive overview of the damage. Once we determine the severity of your injury, we can move forward with the appropriate surgical solution.

Surgical Treatment for Dental Trauma

An avulsed, or knocked-out tooth, must be re-implanted in the socket as soon as possible. The best chance for success of re-implantation occurs within the first 30 minutes. However, a tooth can be saved for up to two hours following the trauma.

Whether or not you need surgery depends on the extent of damage and the location of the missing tooth. If we cannot save the tooth, we may recommend dental implant treatment in the weeks or months following your incident. Dental implants have become the industry standard for tooth replacements.

A deep soft-tissue laceration may also require surgical intervention to control bleeding. During your procedure, we will suture the laceration in a way that minimizes scarring and restores structure. We will also ask you to schedule several follow-up appointments so that we can monitor your healing process.

A broken jaw is another injury that often requires oral surgery. There are several surgical techniques designed to repair the structure of a broken jaw, most of which involve the placement of screws, mesh, wires, or plates. These materials help stabilize the bone to ensure it heals in the proper position.

The Importance of Surgical Intervention

Without proper treatment, dental trauma can cause significant complications for your oral health. As oral surgeons, our job is to restore damaged oral and maxillofacial structures in a safe, effective, and aesthetically pleasing way.
